Tamiya CC-02: Building Scale Trail Trucks That Actually Look Right
Share
Scale trail trucks are a popular part of the RC hobby, and the Tamiya CC-02 is one of the main chassis Tamiya uses for realistic 1/10 4x4 trail kits. It is built around a ladder-frame layout inspired by full-size vehicles, with shaft-driven 4WD and rigid axles.
What the CC-02 is designed for
Tamiya describes the CC-02 for a wide range of off-road use, including rocky terrain. Key points:
- Ladder frame for a scale look and solid structure
- Shaft-driven 4WD with gearbox/transfer layout and propeller shafts to front and rear
- Four-link rigid suspension front and rear with CVA oil dampers
- 3-bevel differentials in the axle housings (can be locked with reassembly for low-grip surfaces)
Stock CC-02 axles are conventional rigid axles — not portal axles. Portal conversions exist as aftermarket/mod projects; they are not standard on the kit chassis.
Popular CC-02 kits
Tamiya has released the CC-02 with scale bodies such as the Mercedes-Benz G 500, Ford Bronco, Toyota Land Cruiser and similar trail-style subjects. On these vehicle kits the polycarbonate body is normally included in the box (along with detail parts). Separate body sets and chassis kits also exist — check each product listing.
What you need to complete it
Contents vary by kit. Many include a Type 540 motor; ESC inclusion depends on the version. You typically still need:
- 2-channel surface transmitter and receiver
- Steering servo
- Battery and charger
- Polycarbonate paint for the body
- An ESC if your kit does not include one
