Tamiya TT-02: The Best Beginner 1/10 Touring Car Kit in Australia

If you're new to Tamiya RC and wondering where to start, the TT-02 is one of the most popular 1/10 on-road platforms in Australia. It's affordable, straightforward to build, and supported by a huge range of bodies and hop-ups.

Why the TT-02 works well for beginners

The TT-02 is a shaft-driven 4WD on-road touring chassis. Battery and motor sit in a balanced left/right layout, left and right suspension parts are identical to simplify assembly, and gearboxes are easy to maintain. Tamiya positioned it as an adaptable entry-level touring platform — not an off-road buggy.

What you need to complete a kit

Exact contents vary by kit version. Many body kits include a Type 540 motor; some export versions also include an ESC. Always check the product page. Typically you still need:

  • A 2-channel surface transmitter and receiver
  • A steering servo
  • A battery pack (commonly 7.2V NiMH or 7.4V LiPo where the ESC allows) and a compatible charger
  • Polycarbonate paint for the body (the clear body is usually in the kit)
  • An ESC if your kit version does not include one

Chassis-only kits need a separate body set as well. Start mild (stock brushed setup) before moving to hotter motors or brushless if you want more speed later.

Running costs in Australia

Tyres, spur gears and occasional body shells are the main consumables. TT-02 hop-ups and spares are widely available, so common wear items are not hard to source locally.
